Confidence Isn’t What You Think It Is
Ever think confident people are born that way? Yeah, I used to believe that too. But let me tell you—confidence isn’t a magical personality trait reserved for a lucky few. It’s a skill. And like any skill, you can learn it, practice and hone it.
But first, let’s cut the bullshit. Forget the fake-it-till-you-make-it mantra. Or all the other risky life hacks promising overnight transformations. Confidence built on shaky ground will crumble the second things go south.
So, let's not build in seismic areas. Let’s talk about real ways to build confidence. The 7 ones that actually stick.
1. Stop Comparing, Start Owning Your Shit
Comparison is the thief of joy. And your confidence. Scroll through Instagram, and suddenly your life feels like a joke. Compared to others’ highlight reels, yes! Been there, done that. But the thing is: confidence starts with accepting who you are. Exact at this moment.
Permaculture teaches us to value diversity. Each plant, animal, and element has a unique role. They all contribute to the system. Confidence is about embracing your individuality. Like a thriving ecosystem, it needs both extremes. Towering oaks and small wildflowers.
How to stop the comparison game:
Audit your social media. Unfollow anyone who makes you feel like the underdog. Your mental health > their artificial, aesthetic feeds.
Practice gratitude. Write down three things you love about your life daily. Do it right now. It rewires your brain to focus on the good.
Celebrate your wins. Big or small. That meeting was productive? Managed to eat healthy? Give yourself some damn credit. Because you deserve it.

2. Face the Fear and Do It Anyway
Confidence isn’t about eliminating fear. No, it's facing your fears! Taking action despite it. Public speaking used to make my palms sweat. But the more I did it, the less terrifying it became.
Nature thrives by facing challenges head-on. Think of a tree growing despite heavy storms. Its roots grow stronger. It gets more resilient after every season. Each time you face a fear, you’re like a tree extending its roots deeper into the soil. Grounding yourself for the next challenge.
Try this:
Take small steps. If networking events feel like walking into a lion’s den, start by introducing yourself to one new person. Baby steps.
Create a mantra. Something like, “I’ve got this,” or “Every expert was once a beginner.” Make it personal, so it fits only YOU.
Reflect on past wins. Remember the last time you thought you’d fail but didn’t? Let that memory fuel you. (And now you have reason #19'745 to keep a journal...!)
3. Ditch the Negative Self-Talk
Uhhh. That was my challenge!
Your inner critic can be a real asshole (language Daniel, language!) “You’re not smart enough,” “You’ll never succeed,” blah blah blah. Time to shut that voice up.
In permaculture, we observe and interact with systems. Always without judging. A plant that’s struggling isn’t critized, it helps us to see what's missing. Likewise, when negative self-talk creeps in, see it as a sign. Look into yourself. Some part of your inner ‘garden’ needs care, not condemnation.
